When COVID happened, a lot of people were affected. I however was one of the fortunate ones It turns out, a lot of people started to try do their own things from home, and very quickly realized they needed more automation in their lives. My business took off, and in early 2022, I knew I could take the plunge. I quit my job as an accountant. That year, I took my business past 6 figures.
I'd spent every day after that first night, playing around with automation tools and finding new ways to streamline my work. I felt the fire inside stirring. What if I could take this beyond the company I worked for? Doing it for other companies instead. Learning from my mistakes, I decided less is more. I went on a popular job platform, and setup a profile. I landed a client in my 1st week. 😊
After walking away from Talentree, I focused on my career as an accountant. At work, a couple of tasks popped up that were time draining the team significantly, and someone had mentioned Zapier as a solution. Intrigued, I looked it up, and saw that they had integrations with Xero which piqued my interest. That night I built my first automation. And just like that, I was hooked.
The decision to walk away didn't come easily. I had spent countless hours, learning web development to build my platform, getting over my introversion to speak to vendors, balancing my full time career, and spending all my free time to grow the business. The reality of it hit when I looked at how much sales the platform made. It was $25. After 9 months of grinding. I was so done with it.
I didn't expect my idea to be crushed so quickly. I scrolled through forums and discussions online from other people, and they all had the same advice. If you can't beat them, then PIVOT!! (the way Ross would say it). And so after months of research, I decided to take Talentree down the route of being a marketplace.
In early 2015, a multi-million dollar modelling agency came out with a platform that did pretty much exactly what I was building out. Their platform was sleek, and their founder not only had a modelling background but also an extensive network of creatives under her belt. There was no chance of competing with them
In 2014, I took my first foray into the world of business, with only an accounting and finance degree to my name. Talentree was a platform for creatives to create profiles and which allowed them to apply for jobs posted in by the general public. I was incredibly excited for every step of the journey
